Description

Rain and Calvin have developed romantic feelings for one another, but can there be any future for the stalwart adventurer and dying doctor? Summers also has feelings for Calvin, though she denies them.

Tristan demands what was promised. Nimoux struggles to recover from a gunshot wound. Rez’nac is desperate to reclaim his honor. Shen wants desperately for Sarah to give him another chance—meanwhile he must struggle with the debilitating pain of The Calling. The Khans threaten to take Aleator One, with the help of the vicious Enclave.

All the while, the Dread Fleet has begun its campaign of extermination, starting with the Polarian Worlds it deems too secular. Their unstoppable march of death and devastation leads them to human space where, either the Empire will find some way to stop them, or else humanity will fall as fulfillment of Polarian prophecy.     Despite the authors ardent claims to the contrary at the beginning of the book - this is simply an opportunity to extent the final chapter across two books rather than one in an attempt to eke out as much cash from the series as possible. As such this latest offering is full of numerous "filler" chapters and scenarios that clearly have no place in the overall story and as such seem forced and miss-aligned with the central plot themes. Characters often actions seemly completely at odds with real human behaviour and emotions and without a modicum of common sense surfacing throughout the entire book. People don't act this way - and in this instance these characters only do so due to the fact that there is obviously a need to generate more content to fill an additional revenue generating novel. A shame because I genuinely have enjoyed this series up until this book and I can't help but feel let down by the obvious corporate greed that has clearly governed its creation.

    I trust the second part of the 'final' book will me better finished than this? This definitely seems like rushed attempt to pad out the finale, despite the authors opening statements. However, numerous monologues and introspection slow it down. Not to mention the vast number of typos, alternate words (predictive spelling, or word recognition?) and punctuation errors, along with one clear instance of the wrong name for a character, make it a bit of a let down for those of us who have enjoyed the saga. It all seems just a bit slipshod, as if the need to 'get something out' on time was the priority, not the quality of the story. Please can the second part be a bit more polished - and properly proof read - before publication, even if it means it's a bit late - the readers would prefer that.
